The adidas Stan Smith tennis shoe has quite a history. It was originally named adidas Robert Haillet after the brand endorsed French prominent player, Robert Haillet, but it was renamed adidas Stan Smith in 1978. Smith is a former world No. 1 American tennis player and two-time Grand Slam singles champion, who played from the 1960s to 19802. He and partner, Bob Lutz, were one of the most successful doubles teams of all time.
Now the sneaker has been remade as a more environmentally sustainable shoe with use adidas’ Primegreen material made from 50% recycled content and a recycled rubber sole. The new version is part of adidas’ commitment to be using 100% recycled polyester in its products by 2024.
Johannes Leonardo has created the campaign that announces the sneaker’s environmental upgrade and the agency has called on Kermit the Frog to highlight its green-ness. Johannes Leonardo and adidas also initiated a Disney partnership to tell the story.
The Disney-Stan Smith sustainable show collection became available to buy on March 29.
The campaign includes three teasers featuring Kermit and Stan Smith, a 60-second spot which references Yoda, Groot and the Hulk, and includes appearances by actress, Yara Shahidi; digital architect, Iddris Sandu; and skateboarder, Nora Vasconcellos.
