Leo Burnett Malaysia reawakens McDonald’s flair for heart-warming (tear-triggering) commercials. This one is for Lunar New Year. It’s the story of a young woman whose attempts to wish her grandmother for Lunar New Year have always resulted in humiliating blunders, in comparison to her brother’s perfect wishes year after year.

There is no McDonald’s to the rescue finale this time. Instead, the girl stops scripting and offers a simple, spontaneous wish. McDonald’s underlines that with its message, “The best wish is always the one that comes from the heart.”
The two-and-a-held minute commercial refocuses a long-held custom to remind Malaysians of the importance of sincerity and love over fancy words and big gestures. A metaphor for McDonald’s restaurants, perhaps?
