Aldi’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar became famous in 2022 when Aldi launched its free Cuthbert campaign on Twitter (now X) in response to Marks & Spencer launching legal action against Aldi over a claim it infringed a trademark on its Colin the Caterpillar Cake. The supermarket – and Cuthbert – won the nation’s hearts.
This year, Cuthbert the Caterpillar pulled another legally provocative stunt to promote the festive choccy cake. McCann Manchester organised for Cuthbert to lead a special, Merry Cuthmas choir outside a competitor’s story. The choir brought with it Aldi’s signature sense of humour giving classic carols hilarious twists – and captured the spirit of Christmas, collecting donations for Teenage Cancer Trust.
The stunt is now a social media campaign.
