Every now and then, I’m sent an mp4 version of an ad, which I publish on YouTube so I can embed here for you [ed]. In the weeks after I published Mother’s Epic Action Man ad for MoneySuperMarket, my YouTube account went into overdrive. The ad has received 297,179 views, 2.1k Likes and 690 comments, just on my channel.
Were all the comments positive? No, there was a lot of applause for the ad and a little homophobic abuse.
Now there’s a new Mother ad for MoneySuperMarket. It’s Mother’s swansong for the comparison site, which is “driving off into the sunset away from us,” Mother explained.
And perhaps that’s where the theme for this last ad came from. It’s an homage to Thelma & Louise and the epic feeling that two Sindy dolls received by saving money on their household bills and breaking out of Sindyville to the anthematic beat of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way. As with Action Man, there’s a social statement mixed into an ultimate feel good vid. There will probably be a smattering of detractors in a lot of MoneySuperMarket conversations again.
Hermeti Balarin, executive creative director of Mother, commented, “As we left the stage after Epic Action Man, we couldn’t resist coming back for an encore. Here’s to the last (we promise) of what has been an incredible series. Sindy and Sindy, you’re so MoneySuperMarket.”
The 60 second spot, which premiered during The X Factor in the UK on Saturday evening, September 15, was made through a partnership with licensor, Pedigree Toys & Brands, and media company, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Darren Bentley, chief customer officer at MoneySuperMarket, commented, “Following the success of He-Man and Skeletor’s Dirty Dancing last year, we decided to harness the power of nostalgia once again by recreating another iconic film with one of our favourite childhood toys. This time it’s Sindy paying affectionate tribute to Thelma & Louise.”
