With a pair of Google cardboard goggles and beta technology developed by Google Creative Labs and Grumpy Sailor, anyone can help to save the Great Barrier Reef.
Between June 28 and July 8, Germany will host the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee in Bonn.
On the agenda is the wording of the draft proposal by UNESCO and IUCN. At present it proposes not to list the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area as “in danger”, but it does put Australia on notice. It asks for a progress report by December 1 2016. If “the anticipated progress is not being made”, the Great Barrier Reef will will be considered by the Committee in 2017.
WWF wants Australians to be aware of what’s happening to the Reef. It gave the job of building that awareness to Republic of Everyone…
…ROE then shared its creative solution with Google Creative Labs, Grumpy Sailor, Underwater Earth and Storyspheres…
And together, the team has created a virtual reality experience that allows people to “visit” the Reef without leaving home – then claim a piece of it and save it.
The experience uses Google cardboard goggles and beta technology developed by Google Creative Labs and Grumpy Sailor. Users just have to visit the campaign website on a smartphone, select the section of the reef they want to experience, place the phone into the virtual reality reef goggles and take a virtual dive on the reef.
With that experience fresh in their minds, users are invited to claim a piece of the reef to protect and to become its ambassador.
