In 2020, Rob Palmer won the National Photographic Portrait Prize with his image that captured Josh Niland’s cheffy passion. It beat 2,500 other entries for that accolade. The Sydney photographer continues to capture gorgeous pictures of mouthwatering food, candidly startling portraits and evocative, arresting lifestyle snippets. Now he has also joined Sam I Am.

Rob’s photographic career began in the surf in Hawaii’s world famous Banzai Pipeline. Those early years as a surf photographer, he says, taught him about commitment, creativity, problem solving and passion, which are the four elements Rob most loves and finds most important in photography.
These four elements have remained constants as his genres expanded. His compositions are carefully constructed now to convey contemporary elegance and appetite appeal in equal measure. Palmer’s use of light and form brings a sense of intimacy to food, people and lifestyle. His focus on detail produces imagery that demands attention with its crisp, graphic appearance.

He is known for elevating a brief and telling captivating stories as well as his relaxed and collaborative approach.
“When taking photos, I aim to capture candid moments, whether I’m photographing people or food,” Palmer stated. “I want to capture more than what is merely in front of me; I prefer that my subject be almost oblivious to my presence. The same may be said about the food; let’s discover what’s within. As long as it stirs up something special in us, its imperfection is irrelevant.”
His images have been sought by Uber Eats, Woolworths, Arnott’s, White Wings, Tandaco, Fonterra, One Night in Mexico, Nestle, Coles, Sunbeam, Cadbury’s, Uncle Toby’s and Qantas among many others.

He is also well known for his celebrity chef portraiture, captured with warmth and authenticity. He has also collaborated with Matt Moran, Josh Niland, Manu Feildel, Justine Schofield, Silvia Colloca and Magdalena Rose to create strking cookbooks that weave the art of storytelling with food porn/poetry.
As well as the The National Photographic Portrait Prize, Palmer has won The James Beard Book of the Year Award in 2020, for The Whole Fish and the James Beard Award for Best Visuals in 2022 for Take One Fish.

Sam I Am founder, Samantha Simpson, added, “Rob takes the phrase ‘you eat with your eyes first’ to an entirely new level. His passion and deep understanding of the culinary arts transforms each shot into a striking food story. Rob has a fantastic eye for detail, light and composition and his food photography is sure to make your mouth water and stomach rumble.”
