The Johnnie Walker Striding Man has stood as a symbol of progress for over 100 years – always stepping with purpose. It’s true that he strode on the sidelines for while as joy took over the brand, but he has never stopped moving forward – until now. In June, Men’s Mental Health Month, he has decided to stand still. To pause, reflect, and rest, and he is encouraging men to do the same.
The idea comes from TBWA Hunt Lascaris and leads with an animated video, Rest Powers Progress, that invites men to rethink what progress really means. In the animation, the Striding Man pauses mid-step, sits down, and takes a moment to reset. Johnnie Walker’s message is to Keep Walking – but don’t forget to stop when you need to. Quiet power comes from stillness.
The campaign, that encourages people to slow down and take care of their mental health, responds to rising rates of burnout, anxiety, and depression – especially among men who often feel pressure to succeed at any cost.
“Progress isn’t only about the next goal or the next milestone,” stated Carl Willoughby, chief creative officer at TBWA\ Hunt Lascaris. “It’s also about protecting your peace, checking in with yourself, and taking time to reset. This campaign is about reminding people that real progress includes rest.”
The campaign ran during June (Men’s mental Health Month) on digital billboards all across the city of Johannesburg and on Johnnie Walker’s social channels.
