M&Ms have wonderful personalities. They’re willful, disobedient, smart-arsed little characters whose antics make them unequivocally likeable even when all they’re doing is scanning themselves at the supermarket checkout.
Classic (clichéd) movie trailers seem to have been specially created to show off their charm. Apparently, BBDO New York, agrees with that idea. It has put them in a movie trailer spoof to air during the 2015 Academy Awards on February 22.
The 30 second spot features all six of the M&M’S Brand spokescandies, in re-enactments of action movie scenes that have been done a zillion times: Orange drives a runaway bus; Red interrogates an alleged criminal; Blue leaps from a burning building. There are secret files, a countdown clock, and an angry cop interviewing a suspect. And of course, there’s the dramatic gravelly voice-over.
The Oscars broadcast will the first time the M&Ms parody ad is shown on television, but it is, in fact, a recycled version of a BBDO New York ad that ran in cinemas nationwide throughout 2014, to remind audiences to turn off their cell phones during the movie.
And this is just in case you missed the M&Ms 2015 Super Bowl ad:
