Gap is working its way back to the top of the Gen Z fashion scene with a little (OK, a lot) of help from the gateway to young people’s hearts Troye Sivan (with his 39 million followers on socials), the gateway to fashion fandom, a current fashion trend – in this case, baggy clothes, and the gateway to youth, TikTok.
The 55-year-old clothing brand has produced a dance video, Get Loose, set to the tune of Thundercat’s Funny Thing, which has already found fame and fortune on TikTok. The campaign features choreographed moves from Sivan and CDK Company, a dance outfit based in the Netherlands and all the dancers are decked out in baggy fits styled from Gap’s new fall collection, which according to the brand, “celebrates both a fit and ‘get loose mindset.” The soundtrack was provided by Jungle featuring South African singer-songwriter, Tyla.
Get Loose is a return to the choreographed dance ads that helped to build its cultural cred in the ‘90s and 2000s.
Gap’s spring campaign was based on Back On 74, another TikTok viral by Jungle that was also led by singer Tyla, fresh off of her first Grammy win.
The spot was directed and choreographed by Sergio Reis, who also curated the dance routines that went into the music video for Sivan’s 2023 song, Rush.
The full campaign covers print and digital media, out-of-home, social media and other channels. It will include an in-store playlist curated by Sivan, which is also slated for release on Spotify.
