“Oregon is a coastal US state in the Pacific Northwest known for its diverse landscape of forests, mountains, farms and beaches. The city of Portland is famed for its quirky, avant-garde culture and is home to iconic coffee shops, boutiques, farm-to-table restaurants and microbreweries. Highlights include the Native American art in the Portland Art Museum, the Japanese Garden and the Lan Su Chinese Garden.” Travel information can be very bland.
And travel ads can be very beige. But Portland, Oregon is also home to Wieden + Kennedy, and undoubtedly one of the main contributors to its “famed avant-garde culture”. So its campaign for Travel Oregon was never going to conform to the norm.
W+K has teamed up with Psyop director, Kylie Matulick, and animation studio, Sun Creature, to create an Only Slightly Exaggerated animated film for its home state.
The “only slightly exaggerated bits” in the 980-second film, include a giant bunny tour guide, a rain god and giant flying salmon – all of which add to the film’s appeal. Oh, there’s also the Hollywood-style music score, which perhaps exaggerates the state’s grandeur somewhat (?!), but definitely makes an impact.
