Been thinking that Old Spice ads could not get any weirder than the recent ones with Terry Crews and Isaiah Mustafa? Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Wieden + Kennedy Portland has taken two already bizarre ads from last year and mashed them together, with help from video artist Nick DenBoer, who also composed the song.
The agency has called the result, Old Spice’s Horrifying Mutant Nightmare Abomination (Remix) , and explains it like this:
“Sometimes when two commercials love each other very much, they get together and spawn a radioactive garbage fire that spews flaming jellied gasoline everywhere and kills all the grass in your yard. Long story short, you have about 30 minutes to watch this video before we have to bury it deep in the Earth’s core for humanity’s well-being.”
The ad is, most likely, a young bloke’s idea of “dope stuff you gotta check out”. There’s no doubt that’s the target audience. It’s also a fantastic promo for DenBoer, although his show reel is remarkable too.
According to the agency, the idea began to germinate when the W+K Old Spice team realised it still had usage rights for the 2015 commercials.
