The Pool Grant is how the Pool Collective supports its industry. It provides $10,000 to an emerging artist so that they can complete a photographic series for exhibition.

It was founded in 2009, because the Pool Collective artists saw a need to support the development of fresh talent in the industry. They have spent the past six years sharing their expertise and acting as mentors to each year’s Pool Grant recipient throughout the creative process.

It’s an open brief: “We are looking for interesting ideas and creativity, as well as your photographic skills.”

The terms and conditions are quite straight forward: “You just need to be either an Australian or New Zealand resident over 18years of age, with less than 3 years commercial experience in photography.

Here’s all you need to do: “Tell us your idea for a photographic series and how you plan to complete this project in a year. Inspire us.”

The 2015 Pool Grant recipient will have a year to make their project a reality, at the end of which they will be given the opportunity to produce their own solo exhibition to show off the completed photographic series.

Entries close at midnight Thursday 30 April 2015. The 2015 Pool Grant recipient will be announced at the opening night on Thursday 7 May at District 01 gallery.

Kate Disher-Quill was awarded the 2014 Pool Grant for her project, Right Hear, Right Now.

Disher-Quill’s project explores the diverse experiences of deafness and hearing loss, using elements of photography, multimedia and installation. Her idea was to produce a sensory experience to provide her audiences with an understanding of what it is like to live with a hearing loss.
