On June 26, the Supreme Court if America upheld Trump’s travel ban, which limits travel from several mostly Muslim countries.
Airbnb’s response was swift. Within twenty-four hours, it had released a digital ad whose message is that “to limit travel is to turn back progress, Let’s keep travelling forward.”
The film is a montage of clips, which run backwards, that ask the viewer to imagine a world without travel – a world in which “everyone built walls and stayed at home.” Among the many things that wouldn’t exist, there would be no America, the ad notes.
The film was created in-house and produced by Where the Buffalo Roam.
Accompanying it, Airbnb has promised to match donations up to US$150,000 to the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) to support its work advocating for systemic change and legal pathways for those affected by the travel ban. It is also emailing all Airbnb hosts in the United States and encouraging them to donate to IRAP.
Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia & Nathan Blecharczyk, stated, “We are profoundly disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the travel ban, a policy that goes against our mission and values. To restrict travel based on a person’s nationality or religion is wrong. We believe that travel is a transformative and powerful experience, and we will continue to open doors and build bridges between cultures around the world.”
This is Airbnb’s third campaign that fights against Trump’s immigration policy.
Following the launch of this Super Bowl ad, Airbnb committed US$4 million over four years to assist the International Rescue Committee for its global work supporting displaced people, offering free housing to refugees and those not allowed into the country.
