AlmapBBDO won Agency of the Year, despite being embroiled in on of the two “scandals” of this year’s Cannes. Global chief creative officer, David Lubars, returned the Bronze Lion won by AlmapBBDO, and withdrew all of the agency’s work for Bayer with dignity and grace:
“I learned last night that one of our very own agencies had a pretty scammy ad in the festival, and it won a Lion. I told them to return it. Because I don’t want that kind of Lion. BBDO doesn’t want that kind of Lion.”
The work had been approved by the local client to be run in Brazil. But the media was paid for by AlmapBBDO, which contravenes the Cannes entry regulations.
AlmapBBDO’s Millions of Images, Endless Possibilities for Getty Images won 1 Gold and 1 Silver in Print & Publishing, 1 Gold and 1 Silver in Outdoor, 1 Silver in Digital Craft, 1 Bronze in Film, 1 Gold in Integrated and 1 Bronze in Direct.
The second challenged entry win is Grey Group Singapore’s I Sea app. On June 23, Cannes Lions formally confirmed that it is reviewing I Sea after the veracity of the app was brought into question.
It had won a Bronze in the Promo & Activation Lions and was shortlisted in the Mobile, Media and Direct Lions at the time. According to Grey, the app is real but is testing mode.
