Simplicity is a remarkable power in advertising, and Coinbase Creative Studio has shown its mastery of that power in its campaign, Your Way Out.
The commercial uses a 1910 musical instrument called a photoplayer (a player piano with organ pipes and percussion) as a metaphor for outdated financial systems. The metaphor is eminently entertaining and there is no voiceover to muddy the message. Instead just two titles make the point: “An instrument from the 1900s is fun…A financial system from the 1900s is not.”
The commercial has launched as lawmakers examine the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (aka, the Clarity Act), which if passed will completely overhaul the US cryptocurrency regulatory landscape by ending the jurisdictional fight between two two federal regulators, the SEC and CFTC.
The new work follows Isle of Any’s much awarded two-minute film for Coinbase in March, that presented “you” as a financial NPCs (non-playable characters) in the game of life – a low-resolution video game world where everyone moves in a loop – until he breaks free.
Showing its flair for saying yes to standout work, Coinbase also released this campaign by Mother at the end of last year:
