DoorDash presents a little holiday reality, and someone who knows what it’s like to carry the holidays on her shoulders – Dasher the reindeer.
DoorDash’s new holiday campaign introduces a different side of the holiday icon. After centuries of delivering holiday magic, Dasher understands the work that goes into making it happen. She’s seen every last-minute crisis, forgotten ingredient and sudden change to a gift list. And she’s developed the same coping mechanisms as parents holding it together by a thread: a strong sense of humour and an unshakable ability to show up.
Dasher steps into the chaos parents know all too well. Part problem solver, part therapist and all sass, she brings a little comic relief and a DoorDash solution to the moments that threaten to unravel the holidays. For once, the person holding everything together has someone showing up for them.
Yes, Dasher is a metaphor and the campaign was made in-house by DoorDash’s brand & creative team and production studio, Superette – with production partner, Makers, and directors, AirCastle (Canadians, Will Beauchamp and Jamie Cussen), & division7.
“Holiday advertising often celebrates the finished picture—the perfect meal, the perfect gift, the happy family. We wanted to recognise the parent just outside that picture, making it all happen. Dasher is in their corner, with a little help and the kind of humor you develop after a few hundred holiday seasons,” stated Jennifer Richardi, head of brand & creative, DoorDash.
“A holiday campaign that doesn’t sugarcoat the season landed for us right away. Forget snow-globe perfection. In the real world there’s always a surprise vegan at the table, a kid with a mouth on him, and someone raging out on a pumpkin. As filmmakers, we loved that you hear Dasher before you see her. You expect a sassy aunt with a glass of wine in hand. Instead the camera pans to reveal a reindeer reclining in an armchair orbellied up to the kitchen island. And nobody blinks as a hairy, 300-pound quadruped buffs a sparkling red hoof and delivers a few hard holiday truths,” Aircastle commentred.
The campaign also extends to social with a series of videos featuring Dasher responding directly to holiday posts, comments and dilemmas. Taking inspiration from TikTok’s comment-reply format, each video pairs her signature dry humour with a DoorDash solution.
Quick history lesson: male reindeer drop their antlers before December, so the antlered crew pulling the sleigh on Christmas Eve? All women. Dasher has been carrying the holidays on her back for a couple hundred years while a guy in a red suit takes the bows.
