I once listened to a radio interview with the current “hot” Australian band. It was disarmingly different from the usual promo. The band members talked about their early days, playing to thousands of people, seeing the songs zoom up the charts, growing a battalion of fans…living in bedsits, eating instant noodles for dinner. [:ed]
Eno Freedman Brodmann’s The Interview is a more sophisticated, more thoughtful, brilliantly impactful work on the theme that the band shared anecdotally. Its synopsis is very simple – “A filmmaker talks up his amazingly successful career on a call with a PR writer doing an interview. The footage, however, shows a different story.”

The film comes from an actual interview Freedman did. In fact, that interview is the framework on which the short film is built. Freedman has made the film over the audio call. His interview answers are juxtaposed against the visual story that shows how his real life is going.
The Interview has a collection of purposes. It’s a self-effacing documentary and a proof of ability woven together. It’s also a very engaging seven-and-a-half minutes that stands out from the crowd.

“I wanted to make a piece that sheds light on how different PR answers can be vs what creatives’ real lives are. I also wanted to make a project by flipping a situation around when I wasn’t getting new work in. I wanted to prove in real time that you can make something out of nothing,” Freedman stated.

Eno Freedman is a commercial and music video director, designer, and classically trained musician. He has a bent for mindful comedy and tasteful satire. His comedy usually has a heart-warming edge. Freedman began as the in-house creative associate at PRETTYBIRD. Prior to PRETTYBIRD, he worked with A-list directors and development teams at Wanda, Anorak, Somesuch, and Iconoclast, seizing the opportunity to study the intensity and comedy of the pitch process.
His film, The Pitch, wraps all this experience, observation and Freedman’s flair for humour into a film that went viral. (Why will be apparent when you watch it.)
Freedman’s work as a director includes campaign films for Samsung, Soulection, Tidal, Ultra Records, L’Imperatrice, Cherokee, and Anne et Valentin. His training and passion for sound has landed him opportunities to curate music for LVMH, Soho House, Art Basel Miami, and Norwood Arts and many music-geared projects. Originally from New York City and an NYU Tisch graduate, he currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
