The founder of production company, Revolver, and twice named as commercial Director of the Year, Steve Rogers is one of the reasons Australia is considered to punch above its weight. He has won every important adland award and worked for an impressive array of brands that matter. Think of the ads that made Nike, Southern Comfort, Old Spice, Dodge, Adobe, James Boag’s, VB, AFL, WWF and Schweppes stand out, and they are likely to be the ones that Rogers directed.

72andSunny ECD, Micah Walker, made an inspired choice of interviewee for the latest episode of The Creative Relay podcast. Walker has worked with Rogers on some of his most awarded campaigns including James Boag’s Pure Waters, so he was eager to sit down and listen to the director’s thoughts on filmmaking and ideas about making advertising.
“I realised I’ve shot with Steve more than any other director in the world, so I am curious to hear his point of view on working with agencies,” Walker commented.
Collaboration is a major theme of the episode, with Rogers sharing his love for what he does and his approach to commercial film-making.
“The single greatest joy of filmmaking is that it’s a collaborative art. The act of working together on something makes it better,” he notes.
In the podcast, Rogers reveals that even with international recognition for his work on brands including Nike, Old Spice and the recent Dundee campaign for Tourism Australia, Rogers credits instinct over expertise for his success.
“Because I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, I rely a lot on instinct. The more you rely on that the more it gives things a particular point of view,” he confesses.
For podcast host, Paul Dunne, Rogers was an inspired choice from Walker. “Steve is our first guest from outside the agency bubble. And his perspective on how we operate – or perhaps should operate – was worth hearing.”

For Smith and Western’s Dan Higson, creator and producer of The Creative Relay, the deviation comes at an interesting time for the popular podcast series.
“We’re now getting thousands and thousands of listens – so we want to make sure we’re always giving our existing audience something new and broadening our appeal at the same time. We’ve got some exciting things in store,” he noted
