In 1985, Nike (Jordan Brand) was fined US$5,000 fine every time Michael Jordan wore black and red shoes in a game, defying NBA dress code rules. Apparently, it paid all of them. The brand then carpe diem-ed those fines, turning them into the brand’s famous, Banned, campaign for Air Jordans.
Nike has now released a new campaign that wonders what would have happened if Nike had never paid the fine. The commercial is a tribute to the prestige of Nike Air Jordans through the sports stars and celebrities that have been associated with the shoe across decades – set humorously to Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust.
The commercial was released before the Grammys, and ran during the awards broadcast.
