Because of human-caused climate change, the seasons are at risk of disappearing throughout the world. Outdoor clothing brand, Bergans, and WWF have sent a letter to the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, asking him to take the initiative for Norway to nominate the seasons of Earth to the UNESCO World Heritage List. If we get the seasons onto the World Heritage List, all 197 member countries are obligated to protect the seasons and thus implement important climate measures.
The idea comes from agency, Pol, with the help of Einar Film, Gimpville and TryApt. It is being promoted with a 2.30 minutes film that will make you think.
Its tone is not sensational. Its information is unexaggerated. Its visual metaphor is a power-cell. The film’s star is in the film is Bergans chief executive officer, Jan Tore Jensen.
Ronny Hammer, brand director at Bergans of Norway, explained, “When we were presented with the idea from our creative agency, we were thrilled. Today, all employees at Bergans are behind the project and campaign, led by our CEO, Jan Tore Jensen, who is also the frontman of the main film. We hope this will engage other brands and people out there as much as it has us. It’s a marketer’s dream to be part of such a journey.”
Historically, when getting something onto the World Heritage List leverage from the public is needed, so campaign also contains a petition asking anyone who cares about climate to sign.
As of today, the seasons check off nine out of ten criteria to get on the list. The only thing that doesn’t check is that it’s not a physical place. That is why the partners believe that the Minister of Climate and Environment must step up and challenge UNESCO to change its rules in order to protect all things that are currently on the World Heritage List, which are also threatened by climate change.
“Our first expedition was with Roald Amundsen to the South Pole in 1911,” Hammer adds, “and for over a hundred years Bergans has been involved in major expeditions around the globe. But this is our most important expedition. The new brand platform and business strategy is now all about leading and inspiring for a sustainable future. Since both Bergans and our customers are based on outdoor activities through four seasons, we have defined our purpose to saving the seasons. This is not a marketing stunt to greenwash Bergans, but a battle we will fight for years to come. The Save the Seasons campaign is the first step on this journey, so join us, share the message and sign the petition.”
Pol creatives, Rikke Sofie Jacobsen, Anette Bellika Finnanger and Sara Marie Hoedneboe, commented, “As a creative team, we must believe that creativity can change more than sales and liking. The fact that we are all in it together with the client to do something substantial by attempting to change a big organisation like UNESCO, feels incredibly exciting – even though it might seem like a naive idea.”
