Google’s Tilt Brush lets people paint in 3D space with virtual reality. That’s exciting for creators.
So Semi Permanent decided to explore what four creators, illustrator James Jean; dancer, Sharni Spencer, of the Australian Ballet, architect and interiors designer, Kelvin Ho; and typographer, Luke Lucas, could do with the tool. It built a completely custom Tilt Brush experience room at Carriageworks during Semi Permanent Sydney – a VR playground if you will – and let an audience watch what its creators made.
Now Semi Permanent and Will O Rourke have created two films with Google VR about the experiment. One is a documentary film; the other, a stereoscopic VR/360 film.
The collaboration process was a world-first, bringing together artists of distinctly different disciplines, in a live environment. Its aim was to explore how this VR technology will shape the future of design and collaboration across various creative disciplines.
Murray Bell, founder and director of Semi Permanent, commented, “At Semi Permanent, we’re fascinated by the idea of virtual reality as a new medium for the creative industries to present their work. So when the opportunity arose to work with Google VR and explore its new 3D painting and sculpting technology, we wanted to give our audience a glimpse into how this technology might one day revolutionise how they work across art, design and collaboration.”
