In September, Sonar Music found out that it had won the most nominations – five of them – at this year’s APRA Screen Music Awards.
That was a huge buzz for the agency that “lives and breathes music, one reel, one frame, one sound at a time.”

Then at the awards presentation on November 9, Sonar composers, Antony Partos and Matteo Zingales, took out the prestigious Feature Film Score of the Year, for American film, 99 Homes.

And Partos won Best Soundtrack of the Year for Sherpa, the documentary about Everest, directed by Jen Peedom.
99 Homes, directed by Ramin Bahrani and featuring Michael Shannon and Andrew Garfield, looks at the devastating American housing crisis.
Zingales and Partos created an atmospheric, pulsing electronic score for the film that scored 92% on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, and a critics consensus that reads: “Fueled by powerful acting and a taut, patiently constructed narrative, 99 Homes is a modern economic parable whose righteous fury is matched by its intelligence and compassion.”
“It was a real privilege to be part of such an important film. Ramin is a man of great intelligence and insight. His films are always highly thought provoking. Ramin had a very strong vision for the film — he took a leap of faith working remotely with us and we were glad to be able to realise that in the score,” Partos stated.
As well as his Best Soundtrack of the Year at APRA, Partos won Best Original Music Score in a Documentary for Sherpa at the AACTA Awards.
He has now won 11 Screen Music Awards in a career that has included composing for TV programs such as Rake, Mabo, Redfern Now, The Slap, Love Child and Deep Water and films including Animal Kingdom, The Homesong Stories, The Rover and Tanna.
“It’s so exciting that Ant and Matteo are getting the opportunity to showcase their talents on international projects. We are thrilled and incredibly proud to see their hours of love and labour being recognised,” commented, Sonar producer, Sophie Haydon.
Zingales is now working on the new feature, ‘Australia Day’ directed by Kriv Sanders and featuring Bryan Brown. Partos is finishing the feature ‘Jasper Jones’, starring Toni Collete and Hugo Weaving.
