Some pretty f***ing awful things happened in 2016.
M&C Saatchi creative, Robert Hall, and Tim Cook from M&C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment could not help but notice.
So shortly after Brexit, Trump’s victory and Leonard Cohen’s death, they decided to highlight the most horrible moments of the year to help to put things right in an advent calendar. Their Badvent Calendar, which is hosted on Tumblr, is like an advent calendar except that it’s 25 snippets of misery and there are no chocolate rewards. It asks you for money instead.
Each post reminds you of a tragic event, like the Ataturk Airport massacre, the killing of the gorilla, Karambe, after a child climbed into his enclosure, and the death of David Bowie.
And while you’re feeling despair about the state of the world, it asks you to donate to EducAid Sierra Leone, a UK charity whose mission is to create “a democratic, dignified and prosperous Sierra Leone, where poverty is eliminated by educated citizens who are able to develop their personal, social and economic wellbeing.”
The pair chose to use their idea to raise money for EducAid Sierra Leone because they feel that education should be a right not a privilege.
“Perhaps if people were a bit more educated, some events in 2016 wouldn’t have happened,” they noted.
Their aim is to raise £1,000 by Christmas. £10 pounds gives education, food and medical care to one pupil for two weeks. £25 pounds keeps a girl in a safe house for three months. £50 pounds feeds a child for one year. And a £195 pound donation will provide education, food and medical care for one Sierra Leone child for one year.
