Who would have thought that the most bizarre Christmas ad of the year would come from Aldi and be directed by Andreas Nilsson (although his Epic Split was nothing ordinary)?
But it is and it has.
It’s not only weird and wonderful because of its content either.
In Germany, there are two Aldis, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. They’ve have been financially and legally separate since 1966, when the founding brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht split the business. This year, for the first time since Aldi was founded, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have launched a joint marketing campaign.
But back to the content from the director who has also given as the wacky TK Maxx Christmas spot this year.
Wieden + Kennedy: TK Maxx presents the Christmas singalong you didn’t see coming
The ad, The Hunger of the Gods by agency Oliver Voss Werbeagentur, is set in a bacchanalian party on Mount Olympus (hilariousy non-Christmas-y). Zeus is having quite a good time at the event for which he has pulled out all the stops and then added abundant “gilding”.
Until the buzzkill arrives. His (Jewish, it would seem) accountant complains that his parties are too expensive.
“We are the gods. Even the morons on Earth can have parties like this,” Zeus barks back.
The difference, the accountant, notes is that on Earth there’s Aldi.
The spot is running in cinemas in Germany, targeting a younger audience.
