Melbourne has been ranked 16th most creative city in Cannes Lions’ Global Creativity Report, but Auckland has soared into 4th place from 19th in 2015, due in no small part to Y&R Auckland’s McWhopper for Burger King.
Among the other Asia Pacific cities, Asia Pacific, Tokyo is 6th, Bangkok 17th and Mumbai 20th.
Sydney’s decline continues to 13th place in 2016, from 9th in 2015 and 8th in 2014. Despite this, Leo Burnett is Australia’s most awarded agency. Clemenger BBDO Melbourne is its 2nd, DDB 3rd, TBWA\Melbourne 4th and Grey Melbourne 5th.
New York is still the world’s most creative city. London is 2nd and São Paulo, 3rd.
Work from emerging markets made an impact this year. There were first-time entries from Moldova, the first Lion for El Salvador, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Croatia and the first Gold for Taiwan in the Entertainment Lions.
Nicolas Hardy from Argentina is this year’s #1 director, a first time for the country. Atul Kattukaran is the first Indian director to rank in the top 10.
South American agencies performed exceptionally well in Innovation. 4 of them made the Innovation Agency of the Year’s top 20:

- J.Walter Thompson Costa Rica, San José, #5
- Grey Brazil, São Paulo, #8
- McCann Lima, Peru, #11.
3 Brazilian agencies made the top 20 for Health Agency of the Year:
- Havas Life, São Paulo, #6
- Triunfo Sudler Brasil, Campinas, #12
- McCann Health, São Paulo, #17
Most awarded client is Samsung, rising from 2nd in 2015. Burger King is #2, rising from 5th in 2015. Microsoft is #3.
The most awarded campaign was McCann New York’s Field Trip to Mars for Lockheed Martin.
The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2016 received a record-breaking 43,101 award entries from 91 countries in 2016. The 24 Lions awards were judged by 387 jurors and 61 countries took home trophies.
