Thai ad creativity is surging. The best of it is different, brave and strategically clever. This commercial by BBDO Bangkok for Johnson & Johnson’s Clean & Clear is different, brave and strategically clever. It’s an ad that most likely does speak to Gen Z in a voice they understand even if it’s a cliché that every teen thinks they’re misunderstood. At the very least, it gets Gen Z’s attention and shows them how to solve a teen problem. Win-win, yes?

The ad within an ad within an ad is all about the teen frustration that no one understands them. That may be a classic teen feeling, but it is certainly illustrated in the most wonderfully humorous way in the ad that uses all the awful ad teen clichés and then shows teens reacting to them. Bright colours, street style, urban idioms, K-Pop romance and rap music are not what teens want, apparently.

In the ad one teen notes, “This ad was created by Gen Y, shot by Gen and approved by Boomers for Gen Z teens.” Apparently, a BBDO Gen Y creative has not yet left teen understanding behind. Finally, Clean & Clear admits that it doesn’t understand teenagers and gets some unsolicited advice.
