D&AD Awards has announced round one shortlists, ahead of the winners being revealed at the ceremony on Wednesday May 22. Final shortlist entries will be announced on May 21. Shortlists have been announced in Art Direction, Book Design, Branding, Casting, Commerce, Digital & Social, Digital Design, Direct, Editing, Entertainment, Experiential, Film, Graphic Design, Media, Music Videos, Packaging Design, Photography, PR, Production Design, Radio & Audio, Visual Effects, Writing for Design.
The US leads with 364 shortlisted entires. The UK has 214. France has 97. Canada has 66. Australia and Japan have 44 shortlisted entries each.
There were 12,387 entries made up of over 30,000 individual pieces of work, the highest number of entries since 2007. 300+ international judges gathered in London to make up 43 juries across award categories including Design, Advertising, Craft, Engagement and Experience, Health, Luxury, Entertainment and Impact.
Entries came from 78 countries, the highest number on record in a decade. 6% of entries from the Middle East and India, 21% from Europe (excluding UK and Ireland), 31% from US and Canada, 3% from South East Asia, 18% from UK and Ireland 5% from Oceania, 5% from Latin America, 4% from China, 5% from Japan and Singapore, 2% from Africa.
All 937 shortlisted entries to date are showcased on the D&AD website.
D&AD President 2024 Jack Renwick, commented, “In a climate where projects and resources are increasingly under pressure, creativity remains unstoppable. Looking across the shortlist, creatives are showing that they can think their way around these restrictions and continue to create brilliant, impactful work.”
As a charity, awards entries enable D&AD to fund educational programs such as D&AD Shift, a free, industry-led night school for self-taught creatives from under-represented backgrounds, currently running in London, New York, Berlin, São Paulo and Sydney, with more locations to be announced.
New categories such as Luxury, Pharma, Sustained Impact, Health and Wellbeing reflect the evolving landscape of the creative industries, acknowledging the increasing importance of these sectors in Marketing and Design.
