Our M&C Saatchi may have British roots but its heart is all Australian. And it’s the agency for Tourism Australia to boot. So when a US upstart begins to mess with our national animal – the one on our coat of arms, no less – well that had to be dealt with. The US does NOT take over things that are near and dear to Aussies on M&C and TA’s watch. And certainly not the emu.
BIG EMU NEWS! After discussions with editors &the NPR RAD team (Research, Archives & Data), the ruling is that ee-moo wins!! The OED’s pronunciation favors ee-mew, this is one of the common words for which NPR doesn’t have a standard pronunciation for, & ee-moo is acceptable. pic.twitter.com/0K0gdyuGqB

While a bunch of Aussies began a war of words – so many words!! – M&C Saatchi and Tourism Australia annihilated the battle by taking over the things that are near and dear to Americans just 10 hours after the US tweet went live.
