Sometimes it seems as though agencies save their best work for themselves. I wonder if that’s because they are their own client? (Put forward with no irony at all.)
The second oldest agency in the US is celebrating 150 years in business. It was founded in 1872. (In case you’re wondering, J. Walter Thompson is the oldest. It was founded in 1864.) The campaign is an absolutely hilarious apology to clients that have fired it, detailing the work that killed the relationships. The stories are not actually true, but they show off the agency’s creativity beautifully. The clients and the timelines are accurate.
To Buitoni Pasta, The Gate apologises for its work on the brand in the 1960s, which accidentally made Americans believe that the business had ties to the Mafia.
With Scot toilet paper, the parting came after an ad that read The number 1 brand for your Number 2s:
Borden was unimpressed with The Gate’s Lucy the Lactose-Intolerant Cow mascot when Mad Cow Disease was making headlines.
Cunard fell out of love with the agency when the agency president was involved in a strip shuffleboard game that made the line famous for all the wrong reasons.
The Gate was initially named Mandel and Frank (after founder, Albert Frank) and was based on 152 Broadway. Ut became The Gate Worldwide in 2005 after a series of name and location changes. It is now part of the global creative and tech group, MSQ, and is based at 71 Fifth Avenue, with sister offices in San Francisco, London and Edinburgh. Current clients include State Street Global Advisors, Nasdaq, BHP, Crowdstreet and National Grid.
