People write really dumb things in YouTube comments and tweets. When they’re taken out of context and strung together, they’re hilarious. Add goopy songs sung with cheesy passion and gooey videos and you have one helluva ad campaign.
Or in Wendy’s case, three.
Last year, Wendy’s USA launched four volumes of Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger Love Songs between July 1 and August 6, created by VML.
Each is a slickly produced music performance, using tweets as lyrics. [Eurovision, eat your heart out.]
Lyrics like, “Fireworks in my mouth hole,” and “Yes, please, thank you,” deserve to live forever on YouTube.
And if you think silly campaigns have to peter out by the 4th execution, not this campaign. Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger Love Song Vol. 4 was the best.
Wendy’s repeated the idea, with a chicken sandwich version, later in the year.
Now, Wendy’s has renewed the campaign for another year. The new music video campaign begins with, Written By Your Comments – Desire: A Wendy’s Pretzel Love Song. It’s no less cheesy than its predecessors. And it has reached nearly 250,000 in two days on YouTube.
The film is part of the brand’s larger campaign that uses ’90s stars, Boys II Men and John Secada, to bring the pretzel bun back.
The pretzel bun returned nationally on July 4. TV ads will launch July 7 and will run for about six weeks.
In the TVC, created by Publicis Kaplan Thaler, Wendy’s recurring Red character pines over Wendy’s pretzel bun to a rendition of Mr. Big’s To Be With You, from 1991.
The digital campaign, created by VML, will solicit tweets and Facebook posts using the #pretzellovesongs hashtag. Wendy’s will take some of those tweets and put them to full-length music videos.
But the first video, released on June 30, features social media comments from consumers missing the pretzel bun and longing for its return after the limited-time item disappeared.
And here it is in all its gooey glory:
