If an advertising business wants to break into a market, it usually opens an office there. Zulu Alpha Kilo tends not to do the usual.
In fact, Ad Age’s global Small Agency of the Year 2016 (the first non-US agency to win the title), states that it “enjoys a maverick position in the industry by daring to do things that are different.”
It also says that, “since opening its doors in 2008, Zulu has grown each year despite not participating in over 80% of the pitches they’re invited to.”
Zulu Alpha Kilo wants to crack the US market. It hasn’t opened an office in New York. What it has done is send an unsolicited humorous video Request For Proposal to the campaigns of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, including some unsolicited campaign ads.
And also to all the trade media.
Of all the parody Trump and Clinton campaigns, this is the most ingenious use of the year’s hottest trending topic for the business world. Isn’t it?
Zulu Alpha Kilo’s website pokes fun at its own industry. Please note the top post there. It’s the founder’s introduction to the agency. You will (or should, perhaps) wince at its mockery. Notice, too, how Zulu makes its own difference stand out. The character is played by veteran commercial and film actor, Doug Murray, who recently featured in Spotlight, 2015’s Oscar winner for Best Picture.
And here’s the agency’s attitude to speculative creative bidding in new business pitches.
Do you wish you’d stated yours like that?
