Perhaps Edvard Munch’s The Scream is your metaphor for 2017? Perhaps you’d just like to create like one of the world’s great masters?
Adobe has teamed up with The Munch Museum in Oslo to recreate digital versions of the original brushes used by Edvard Munch, which are now more than 100 years old and have been locked in a vault since Munch’s death.
Adobe collaborated with Photoshop brush maker, Kyle T. Webster, to make the digital brushes available in Creative Cloud for Photoshop and Sketch users worldwide.
With the support of the Munch Museum’s conservation experts, each brush was photographed in 360 degrees using ultra-high-resolution cameras to document all angles and details to create an accurate three dimensional representation.
Munch’s artistic style and brushwork was closely analysed by art historians, and combined with data about the brushes’ attributes, including physical properties such as flexibility and bristle type.
Kyle T. Webster then transformed all of the data collected into digital representations of Munch’s brushes, capturing the exact shape and minutely detailed performance attributes of each brush in digital form.
Swedish agency, Abby Priest, has created the campaign for the project, The Hidden Treasures of Creativity, which includes the video below.
The brushes can be downloaded here. The site contains tutorials for mastering your use of the new brushes.
Adobe is also running a competition from June 15 to July 14 to encourage Photoshop and Sketch users to use the brushes to create their own versions of The Scream. Edvard Munch made four different versions of the artwork and 80 years on, Adobe is challenging artists worldwide to create The 5th Scream.
Entrants submit their artwork to Behance with the tag #MunchContest, for the opportunity to have their work of art displayed in The Munch Museum in Oslo and as part of a special Behance collection. The grand winner will also receive a cash prize of €6,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to Adobe MAX, the world’s leading creativity conference, in Las Vegas October 18 – 20, among other prizes.
Submissions will be judged on originality, artistic composition, consistency with the theme and creativity by a dedicated panel of judges. Winners will be announced on July 28.
