In Latin America this year, racism in football has begun to be played out as fiercely as matches.
When Brazilian football club Botafogo, went out on the field to play a recent match, the team was wearing the black and white jerseys it has for the last 100 years, with one change – the two colours were inverted.
Fans didn’t notice the difference until the team posed for a photo after the game, while holding up a banner with the message, “If you didn’t notice the inverted jersey, it’s because colour makes no difference at all.”
The stunt was the third most tweeted topic during Botafogo’s match. Supporters on both sides and even players on the opposing team tweeted.
