There have been 54 years of D&AD Awards. D&AD still only applauds the kind of work that makes your peers (OK, rivals) say, “I wish I’d done that!” It’s still all about creative excellence
And because there are new places, and new ways, to achieve creative excellence there are new ways to win D&AD Pencils.
- There are two new categories – PR and Media. Each has been launched with a number of sub-categories that range from use of print, branded content, events, stunts, crisis management to use of data.
D&AD chief executive officer, Tim Lindsay, commented, “Where once the function of a PR or Media department was to support and elevate a creative campaign designed by a separate agency, today the lines of creativity are blurred. Successful campaigns are no longer just crafted in the confines of creative agencies, creativity can no longer be pigeonholed in this way.
“Celebrating and awarding creativity is at the heart of what D&AD does and so it makes sense to move with the times. Increasingly whole creative campaigns are being designed and created in-house by talented teams who are just as adept at harnessing the power of social media or data as they are creating their own content.”
- Marian Salzman, chairman, Global Collective and chief executive officer, North America, Havas PR, is to be jury foreman for PR.
- Tess Alps, chairman of Thinkbox Media, is to be jury foreman for Media.
- The Book Design category was hugely supported in 2015, so D&AD has added new sub-categories to it.
- Product Design has added new categories for 3D printed products and wearable technology.
- There is a new Printed Games sub-category in Graphic Design.
- Branded Film Content & Entertainment and Film Advertising have also gained extra sub-categories.
- Radio Advertising has expanded with a subcategory dedicated to branded audio content, as this area has seen significant growth in the past 12 months.
- Social video has been added as a sub-category in Digital Marketing

There are also so many more things to so, do (and be seen at) during Judging Week 2016.
The next Judging Week will run over 8 days at the Truman Brewery. And judging will be interspersed with workshops, industry talks, panel sessions, parties and networking sessions as well as a concurrent New Blood fringe event.
Donal Keenan, D&AD Awards director explained, “We’re going to build on last year and make it bigger and better. More tours, more talks, more insight sessions, more lectures… and more parties. It will be more international. More inclusive. There will be more co-creation. All in all, it’s going to be more of what the creative community loves; all against the backdrop of the world’s finest creative work and minds.”
