Marcel has made its inaugural year memorable with its work for OPSM, Tiger Beer and UNICEF. Its creative department has added to its top layers already.
Wesley Hawes, has left his position as joint executive creative director of TBWA/Sydney to join the management team at Marcel Sydney as deputy executive creative. He will work with executive creative director, Scott Huebscher, and Marcel creative chairman, David Nobay.

Hawes joined TBWA from BBH, where has was global Axe/Lynx creative director and partner for 3 years. His most famous campaign in this period was the Axe Apollo Space Academy, a global campaign to send regular blokes into space. The campaign was awarded Gold, Silvers and Bronzes at Cannes, and was made a Titanium Finalist two years in a row.
Hawes had another 5 year stint at BBH in the middle of his career, in which he won Cannes Lions and D&AD Pencils for Robinsons and created one of the most notable campaigns of 2008, Waterslide for Barclaycard.
At TBWA, which was also a return – Hawes had been a copywriter at Whybin\TBWA in 2009, he led his creative department to win 20 pitches and three Agency of the Year Awards.
“I’ve enjoyed great success at Whybin’s, both creatively and from a new business perspective, but part of me wanted to get back into the engine room,” Hawes commented.
“What I like about Marcel is the structure feels super collaborative and immediate. Scott and Nobay still write and Iona and Gav write briefs. I missed this direct involvement in the work and the crafting process. I don’t think any other agency in Sydney offers clients such direct access and consistent involvement from their senior talent.”
Huebscher added, “I know what people are going to say, ‘Does Marcel really need more senior people?’ And to that I would say ‘No, we don’t.’ But we didn’t go looking for senior people. We went looking for the smartest, nicest people out there. And we found that in Wes.”
Hawes joins Marcel in mid-January and will be working with the management team across all clients and new business opportunities.
