Director, Tom Schlagkamp explored one of the world’s hottest topics right now. Our fake lives on social media. His ten minute film, Dysconnected, was underlined by music composed, produced and supervised by MassiveMusic, which premiered at the L.A. Shorts International Film Festival on July 21.
Dysconnected explores the impact of social media and AI on our lives. It’s the story of Roxy, a millennial who is struggling to find her place in life. Everything she does is connected to the digital world. She even has an Artificial Intelligence therapist. Roxy is having more and more trouble distinguishing between her online world and the real world.
MassiveMusic’s dramatic score supports the fast-paced narrative, echoing the pathos and intense speed of the visual storytelling. The music agency’s work is a mix of music composition, which sees sound design as an unavoidable complementary element, and the licencing of Carry You by Welsh multi-instrumentalist Novo Amor as the film’s ending track.
Job Poels, music producer at MassiveMusic, commented, “We wanted the music to reflect the state that the main character is in as she goes through a rollercoaster of emotions. That is why the score changes with her perspective, yet it still keeps a consistent and recognisable theme.”
Director, Tom Schlagkamp, added, “My purpose was not to give judgement on the topic but to bring across a vibe, an intention. I wanted the audience to be open to their own interpretation. You go through a lot, even if it’s in a span of ten minutes. MassiveMusic managed to translate each scene into sound with a blend of fairytale-like orchestration, loud EDM tracks and edgy sound design, weaving them together as if they were made to coexist in the first place.”
