Swedish football club, AIK, has been classified as a religion by the Swedish government. Weekend gatherings, shared hymns, sacred symbols, and rituals are a fundamental part of sports fans’ lives. To such an extent that the AIK-inspired organisation, Vår Svartgula Sal was officially recognised as a religious community by the Swedish government – making the football club AIK the world’s only true football religion.
To celebrate the historic decision, AIK has collaborated with Nike to create the Smokinglirare Edition – a sacred, tuxedo-inspired jersey that reignites the discussion on where the boundary between sports fandom and traditional faith truly lies. The campaign was devised by Swedish agency River, that has also worked on several previous jersey launches in the AIK-Nike collaboration.
The exquisite aesthetics of the campaign film reference the evocative power of religion:
“For many, AIK is not just football – it’s a lifestyle and a faith. We want to highlight that dedication while also raising the question of where the line between sports fandom and traditional religion actually lies,” stated Tobias Larsson, head of communications at AIK Fotboll.
The new jersey has been developed by AIK in collaboration with Nike, with a focus on capturing the club’s cultural significance to Swedish football. Every detail on the jersey is handcrafted in unique 3D silicone with infused metallic particles. This creates a shimmering depth and contrast against the black velvet base on which each element rests.

The Smokinglirare Edition was premiered at Stureplan in Stockholm on Thursday evening.
“It’s hard to put into words the sense of community, meaning, power, and the rituals that exist in and around AIK. But that is exactly what we want to capture and manifest in this campaign. We want to celebrate the passion and loyalty that runs through AIK and its supporters – something even Sweden’s legal, financial and administrative services agency recognised when they acknowledged Vår Svartgula Sal as a religious community,” stated Richard Teroni, strategist and co-founder of River.
AIK will sell 134 copies of the Smokinglirare Edition jersey, with season ticket holders able to register their interest between February 14 and 16. A raffle will then take place, where the winners will have an exclusive opportunity to purchase the new jersey for 1,299 SEK. The surplus of the sales will be donated in full to Stadium Sports Camp, a non-profit organisation dedicated to getting more children active and giving them access to sports. The contribution will provide children from underprivileged backgrounds the opportunity to attend a sports camp in the summer of 2025.
“The club would like to thank all the sponsors who made this project possible by donating their space on the jersey. Thanks to them, the Smokinglirare Edition has become a tribute to our supporters and our shared faith in AIK – in a design that puts the message front and centre,” Larsson commented.
