We saved the best for last. Yes, this is the last in The Stable’s series – a massive thank you to the wonderful creative brains that contributed their wild and wondrous ideas. It’s the best because ideas matter, and quirky ideas matter even more. Without inventiveness, the world would be beige. Beige doesn’t change things. Beige just sits there looking bored. Nothing good can come of that.
Here is the final What made it great? for 2020. (A new series begins in 2021.)
What makes a great idea? by Ronojoy ‘tintin’ Ghosh:

Is it the craft or the sheer luck of having struck upon it? Or is it the passion that goes behind bringing it to life? What may seem impossible to achieve can change the world just by the tenacity of the people behind it.
Those who believe in a great idea will go to any lengths to make it happen.
We’ve all got our favourite advertising ideas. Mine just happens to be Little Caesars’ campaign from the ‘90s.
But what about all those other ideas that live on the fringe, those that never seem to make it big but yet their creators never give up. And somehow, by sheer tenacity they make it happen.
Here are my picks for the ideas that took a lot of hope and hard work to make them great.
- THE BOYS
What started out as an obscure comic in 2006 took 14 years to make it into the realm of great for those who created it. Now it’s a hit show on Amazon and because I couldn’t wait for season 3 to start sooner, I read the whole comic book series, all 72 of them!
- CHEESE ROLLING
Why do I get so much pleasure in seeing people fall over and hurt themselves? What was once an obscure tradition for the people of Gloucester, England has now become a world-famous event. People running down, no falling down, a hill to catch a wheel of cheese. Genius!
- BLACK METAL
This isn’t great music, but I love the myth surrounding it. What makes it great are the stories that brought this genre of music to the world’s attention. Watch the movie, Lords of Chaos, to follow the journey of a band called Mayhem. It’s messed up!
So, what does make it great? Maybe it’s just a question of taste. What I find great, you might not. But that’s the beauty of it.
