Remember when inclusivity and acceptance were what we all aimed for? Apparently, lawmakers don’t. In the US, some states have passed laws banning transgender people from using bathrooms that match their gender identity. But in the UK, that ban is widespread. A recent UK Supreme Court ruling that legitimises the exclusion of trans women from female-only spaces.
Laura Coedo and Ana Esteban, two students from the Brother Madrid School of Creativity, have launched a brilliantly creative protest, turning bathrooms into protest spaces against institutional transphobia.
They’re inviting people to piss on the law – literally.
The activists are visiting bars and venues in Chueca, the heart of LGTBIQ+ life in Madrid, posting printed copies of the British ruling on toilet seats, inviting anyone who enters to urinate symbolically on the law.
“We want people to know that from Spain, we don’t just see this as a legal outrage, we actively stand in solidarity with trans women. We want to support and empower the UK trans community, make as much noise as possible, and contribute in any way we can to changing this,” stated Coedo and Esteban.
The action also extends to social media, where they invite people to share photos of the stickers in bathrooms, aiming to amplify the message and create international resonance.
