The work of Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) is harrowing. A film about that work is going to be difficult to watch. And that’s important. Complacency doesn’t fund Médecins du Monde’s work.
DDB Paris’ quasi-documentary film is the story of one doctor. Seen through his eyes and told with his voice. Underlined by the tagline, #ShutUpDeath – the rallying cry of the doctors in the face of tragedy and injustice.
The film was directed by Brazilian filmmaker, Felipe Vellas, who is known for his 2013 Leica film, Soul, which won 5 Lions at Cannes and 18 international awards. It is running online, on TV and in cinema, supported by a series of five posters and in social media.
“The film is paced by actions: by those actions that travel, that we teach and that survive after our intervention,” explained Dr Françoise Sivignon, president of Médecins du Monde.
“These are saving actions. These are actions that silence death. Because real change takes place over time, because the people helped have a role to play in the evolution of their own society, Médecins du Monde is committed to giving them the means.”
The poster campaign carries a message of hope and solidarity, underlined by the campaign slogan, Shut Up Death, and visuals from the famous Magnum photography agency. Each poster addressed a different aspect of the work of Médecins du Monde’s work – the war in Yemen, ethnic cleansing raging in Burma, the fate of migrants in France or elsewhere, and access to healthcare for communities in Pakistan.
